    Civil War
According to A Compendium of the War of the Rebellion (Frederick Dyer, 1908) there were over 10,400 engagements in the American Civil War. This database contains information on approximately the 90 most important engagements. The Civil War Sites Advisory Commission's Report on the Nation’s Civil War Battlefields was used as the baseline for determining which battles should be included. In addition, The Civil War Battlefield guide (see sources below) was another major source for the selection of battles and for the number of forces involved. The number of forces was cross-checked when possible against Livermore's Number & Losses with Livermore's data holding primacy. In addition, E.B. Long's The Civil War Day by Day Almanac and The Civil War Dictionary were used as a final source for forces engaged.
